Chapter Fourteen: Kian

The black wolf with the pale shock of fur on the head was obviously excited to see him, licking at Kian’s hands and growling softly, then snarling menacingly at Tiberius and Marcus whenever they moved.

“Sorry I didn’t come sooner,” he said, sitting down heavily in one of the armchairs in Tiberius’s room.

“Morning sickness?”

He nodded, heat seeping into his cheeks.

“Taken a test yet?”

He shook his head and petted the wolf’s head absently. “No progress with him?”

“Nothing. He doesn’t seem to understand what we’re saying. I wonder if he even recognizes us. But he recognizes you, has done ever since you found him in the woods.”

“So what do we do?”

“Can you calm him down, get him to shift? He doesn’t seem to understand me.”

“I’ll try.”

“I think you’re the key. It’s not random that he knows who you are, that he’s protective of you.”

The thought was heartwarming.

“But what should I do? I’ve talked to him, petted him. What else can I try?”

“Yeah, that’s the thing I wish I knew...”

Kian’s stomach was in a knot. He was afraid for Nero. He thought he’d be back to human by now. He needed to talk to him about everything, about his feelings. About his pregnancy. And...

He clapped a hand over his mouth and stood up. “Sorry. I’m a bit...”

“...pregnant?”

“Nauseous. Bathroom.” He ran, barely made it before losing his lunch in the toilet. He heaved and heaved.

God. Damn. It.

When he sat back, at last, the wolf was at the bathroom door, ears up, letting out small whimpers.

“Hey, wolf.” Kian tried on a shaky smile. “I’m okay, don’t worry.”

“You should drink lots of fluids,” Marcus said when he returned to the living room, the wolf in tow. “And take that test, book a doctor appointment... you know. The works.”

“Yeah...”

“So think you can tackle this wolf problem?”

“Maybe...” Kian licked his dry lips and sat down, glanced at the wolf who was settling back in his favorite place, at Kian’s feet. “Maybe if you left us alone for a bit?”

“Not sure that in your condition you should be left alone with a wolf.”

“But it’s not just a wolf! It’s Nero. And as you said, he knows me.”

The two alphas exchanged pensive looks.

“It’s risky. There’s not much of the human left in him right now. What if he flips and decides to have you for dinner? You can’t even risk.”

Kian placed a hand over his belly, something he found himself doing more and more, as it began to swell. “I don’t think he will do anything to harm us.”

Marcus whistled low. “That’s romantic, if naïve. Hear that, Nero? Promise you won’t hurt the pretty omega?”

The wolf growled, showing all his yellow, sharp teeth.

“You really think that talking to him alone might work?” Tiberius looked doubtful.

“I have no way of knowing. I just know that I want to spend time with him alone. Please.”

Tiberius shrugged broad shoulders. “Fine. If you’re sure. I’ll hang out outside, close enough to hear if you shout, if anything happens. Would that work for you?”

“I can work with that,” Kian whispered, scratching his wolf behind the ears.
